vivianne zhang wei (张凯薇)
hello! i am an independent swedish-born chinese ethnographer and multimedia storyteller/organiser exploring the evolving relationships between the rural and urban, local and global, agricultural and cultural in contemporary china.
in theory as well as in practice, i tend to be sceptical of arrangements that produce monoculture, and curious about those where more gets to flourish. i therefore see my various research, storytelling, organising and enterprising activities all as one ongoing endeavour to make space for diverse forms of producing, relating and becoming across china’s transforming rural-urban landscape and beyond.
i hold a Liberal Arts and Sciences BASc from University College London (2020-23), an MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies from the University of Oxford (2025-26) and an honorary membership in the Nanbu County Qitian Specialised Planting Cooperative (2024-present). i am currently based nowhere, but moving mainly around china and occasionally through london, DC and NYC. if you would like to work together, get together or support my work in some way, you can keep up with my movements & reach me via @chinesefarmchronicles, or:
